“Treat your password like your toothbrush. Don’t let anybody else use it, and get a new one every six months” – Clifford Stoll

What is Strong Password ?

In a nutshell, a strong password must constitute the following:

  • It needs to contain special characters such as @#$%^&
  • It must be at least 8 characters long.
  • It must not have any common words such as 123, password, your birth date, your login name and any words that can be found in the dictionary.
  • a variation of capitalization and small letters

This is to make sure that in the event that one account is hacked into, your other accounts will not be affected.

How Strong is your Password?

Online services like Google’s Gmail or WordPress have password meters that calculate the strength of password as you type more characters into the box.  If you don’t find any password meters on the site, you use online like the Microsoft Online Password tool (this works instantly)

You can also use Password Meter – an online tool that will not only rate your password’s strength but will offer clues on what you kind of characters can you add or remove to improve the password’s strength.

Conclusion

Generating and using a strong password is the most important thing that you should take note of is your internet browsing habits. When you are browsing in Internet Cafe, make sure that it has the proper firewall and anti-virus installed, make sure your network is secure, log out when you are done with your session and clear the cache once you are done.

Some times its get hard to rememberer so many passwords.. So we can do is we can take few uncommon words (you may can try some common words also) which we can remember and mix it with special characters and number which looks similar with the latter in that word. for e.g.: if you take “backspace” in your password you can use it as “ba(K$p@cE”… Now in different account mix up with upper case lower case and like this from one word you can get many different passwords.. So if your one account get hack or something you can get little time to change to password of other accounts…

I used to use Roboform to generate passwords for me but of course they are too hard to memorize and I had to have roboform fill the boxes for me. However this is only useful if you are on your own computer since you have to install roboform in your browser.

This Microsoft online tool is just so funny. If I type my 10 digit secure password, it says its weak, but if I enter “passwordpassword” then it is STRONG.

I’ve described my password system here:

I think it’s a good way to generate and remember more than one secure password.
