Desktop e-mail clients are better becoause of many reasons.
- Flexibility : The flexibility softwares have no other things can have. For example we take Mozilla’s Thunderbird here in this case. As same as Mozilla’s FireFox we can add so many plugins in Thunderbird (DeskTop Email Client) to get a better interface.
- User Friendly Interface: In this world of web marketing . We will surely got a lot of emails for marketing purposes or even we can have different emails , just like one for business and one for personal use. For example if we take one from GoogleMail and one from HotMail. We will have different interfaces on both. So to have a common and user friendly interface for all of your emails you can use Desk. Email Clients!
- Fast Management : This word “Management” comes in each and every thing of my life. Without better management and organized system I am incomplete! So as a Company owner I will suggest everyone to use Desk. Email Clients because with them you can fetch all of your emails from different accounts at a very fast speed. And reply to all of your customers in just seconds! This is one more positive point

I do not think client email is better than web based email in term of secure. Now I can say that thanks to 2-step verification that has just been released by Gmail recently, I will never think about using client mail.
However, client email is better than web mail in case you are business users.

I fully agree with your point of view. I have tried to switch to cloud e-mail services/clients so often and I have always come back to the good old desktop. Just use IMAP so that you have a synchronised web service as a second option when you’re away. IMAP works great with Postbox and with most mobile clients. So I have my company’s e-mail synchronised on my desktop, with Postbox, and on my Windows Phone (Windows Phone 7′s e-mail client is the best looking and fastest e-mail client on ANY platform). I honestly tried to like GMail, after all the fantastic reviews you read everywhere, but I don’t know what it is, I just CANNOT get myself to like it.

I disagree with all your points but still prefer using my desktop email client (MacMail), simply because it homogenises the email handling interface. I have MacMail set up with one gmail accounts and two company emails from different domains, and the all look the same on my desktop, and I can drag emails between them and organise emails from different addresses into the same folders when relevant.
However, feature- and extension wise it doesn’t come anywhere near gmail, and I do miss many of gmail’s features. Gmail feature innovation is like a relentless river that never stops flowing… many which I wouldn’t even have though of. Labs (part of settings) is worth checking on a regular basis just for the inspiration.
