HTTP stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol, so HTTPS stands for the same thing but with Secure on the end of it. HTTPS is a significantly more secure version of HTTP, which is the protocol you generally use to load up your webpages . As Wikipedia will tell you, HTTPS is “a combination of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol with the SSL/TLS protocol to provide encrypted communication and secure identification of a network web server.”
HTTPS provides additional security, but what does that actually mean when you’re browsing the web every day? It basically means you’re protecting your private information from people who want to steal it using readily availably tools

On sites like like Facebook, Gmail or Twitter, HTTPS is much required. Twitter has just added an option to turn on HTTPS encryption for every connection.
How to Enable the HTTPS Setting in Your Twitter Account:
- Go to your Twitter settings page.
- Tick the Always use HTTPS checkbox.
- Click Save and re-enter your password when prompted.
Hereafter, Twitter will always send data back and forth using the considerably more secure HTTPS protocol which means you can open up Twitter from anywhere without any worries.

As for accessing Twitter using other clients, Twitter’s post notes:
HTTPS is used whether or not you’ve enabled the “Always use HTTPS” setting:
- When you log into Twitter, so your password stays protected.
- On the official Twitter for iPhone and iPad mobile application.
There are also a few instances where turning on HTTPS in your settings does not force HTTPS. For example, when accessing Twitter from your mobile browser, you need to go to https://mobile.twitter.com to use HTTPS for now.

The more web services offer HTTPS the better. This should be standard in most web services by default in the first place. Glad companies finally acting to offer this to everybody!
