What is Firefox Sync ?
If you are already using the Firefox 4 Web Browser, Firefox Sync is a feature that you must not missed. Firefox Sync is a service that lets you synchronize your browsing history, bookmarks, tabs, passwords, and form-fill data from desktop to mobile without interruption. Do not worry about the confidentiality of your Firefox data as the data will be encrypted using the Sync key before it is stored in Mozilla servers. The Sync key is a long string comprised of a combination of alphanumeric characters generated by Firefox Sync.

Note: Firefox Sync employs the symmetric cipher – Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) with 256-bit key and the asymmetric cryptography – RSA with 2048-bit key in encrypting the data. These encryption algorithms ensure the data is stored securely and even Mozilla is not able to read the data.
How to Synchronize Firefox Data using Firefox Sync:
Follow the below steps to configure the Firefox Sync account:.
- Go to the Sync tab from the Options window (Tools menu -> Options). Click the “Set Up Firefox Sync” button.

- Enter the email address and password to access the synchronized data. Agree the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy and click continue.
- The Sync key will be generated. It is very IMPORTANT to print a copy of the key and keep it safely. The key is required to retrieve and decrypt the uploaded data.
- Enter the CAPTCHA text in the Window to indicate that you are not a robot.
- Now the setup is complete and Firefox Sync will automatically synchronize the data to Mozilla servers in the background.
Firefox Sync also provides a backup solution which can restore the Firefox browser data if the system is rebuilt. If you have doubt related to this post, please let me know via comment box provided below.

I’ve read a lot about Firefox 4 sync. As I understand it, “sync” means MERGE — changes on either system will be merged with those on the other.
What I haven’t been able to find is: What happens on the INITIAL sync? I’d like the primary system to wipe out the settings on the secondary system. I DON’T want them to merge initially.
Is that possible?
Thanks — Vincent
