Google Chromebooks: Everything You Need to Know

Google has finally announced the release of  first Google Chromebooks models built by Samsung and Acer. Chromebooks are built and optimized for the web, where you already spend most of your computing time. So you get a faster, simpler and more secure experience without all the headaches of ordinary computers.

Samsung’s model will be priced at $429 for a Wi-Fi version, while $499 includes a 3G / World Mode radio for use on Verizon’s mobile broadband network; the carrier will provide 100 MB of monthly data use for two years at no change, with additional data available for purchase. Additional specifications include:

  • 12.1-inch display with 1280×800 resolution and 300 nit screen
  • Dual-core 1.66 GHz Intel Atom processor
  • 8.5 hours of continuous battery life
  • HD webcam, noise-canceling microphone
  • 2 USB ports, 4-in1 memory card slot, mini-VGA port
  • Full-sized keyboard and clickable trackpad
  • 3.26 pounds
Acer’s model is slightly smaller and shares many similar specifications. Here are the key differences for its Chromebook, which starts at $349:
  • 11.6-inch HD Widescreen display
  • 2.95 pounds
  • 6.5 hours of continuous usage
  • World Mode 3G model will be available at a future announced price

Features of Google Chromebooks:

1. Chromebooks boot in 8 seconds and resume instantly. Your favorite websites load quickly and run smoothly, with full support for the latest web standards and Adobe Flash.

2. It’s easy to get connected anytime and anywhere with built-in Wi-Fi and 3G. As Chromebook boots up, it quickly connects to your favorite wireless network so you’re on the web right from the start.

3. Your apps, documents, and settings are stored safely in the cloud. So even if you lose your computer, you can just log in to another Chromebook and get right back to work.

4. Every Chromebook runs millions of web apps, from games to spreadsheets to photo editors. Visit the Chrome Web Store to try the latest apps, or just type in a URL. No CDs required.

5. Chromebooks are easy to share with family and friends. They can log in to experience all of their own Chrome settings, apps, and extensions, or use Guest Mode to browse privately. Either way, no one else using your Chromebook will have access to your email and personal data.

6. Chromebook gets better and better over time, unlike a traditional PC. When you turn it on, it updates itself automatically. All of your apps stay up-to-date, and you get the latest and greatest version of the operating system without having to think about it. Annoying update prompts not included.

7. Chromebooks run the first consumer operating system designed from the ground up to defend against the ongoing threat of malware and viruses. They employ the principle of “defense in depth” to provide multiple layers of protection, including sandboxing, data encryption, and verified boot

Chromebooks will be available online June 15 in the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, Netherlands, Italy and Spain. More countries will follow in the coming months. In the U.S., Chromebooks will be available from Amazon and Best Buy and internationally from leading retailers.
