To survive in the App Store is a big deal today. There are several steps involved in creating a successful app. The first step to creating an iPhone application is to have an idea. This must be a good, unique idea; otherwise your application will not be a success.

After you come up with an idea, then it is a matter of getting the application created.

Planning
The first step is to know what you will need to create the application. Typically, you will require the iPhone Developer Program, an iPhone or iPod touch, an Intel Based Mac, and the latest version of iPhone SDK. Once you have all that, it is a matter of figuring out how the application will be created and mapping out the process so you have a clear plan to work to.
I would advise splitting the process out and looking at each part individually which makes things more manageable. For example, market research, outlining the application’s functionality and deciding what will work and what will not work on the application, coming up with the GUI design, and then take care of the programming are all parts of the process.
If you do enlist any help from other people, even if they are a friend it is advisable to have a non-disclosure agreement with everyone who is working with you, as you do not want ideas to be leaked out about the project.

Getting Started
Action: If you do enlist the help of anyone else select skills that are a good fit for you to lead and decide if you want to let those helping you lead their parts of the project of if you want to be closely involved in every step.
Market Research
The next important step is to do the right kind of market research to ensure that you know what kind of market you are trying to create an application for. The important part is to know what is out there, and how those applications function. While it is all well and good to create an application, if it does the same things as others then it is useless. You either need something that works a bit differently, or you want something that is better and faster and more advanced. Either way, you need to come up with a unique idea.
Next, you need to know who is going to be using this application. That way, you have an intended demographic in mind and can see what features they would like in the application. If you are creating a sports news application, then an add-on with updated live scores may be a good addition your targeted audience would appreciate.
Sketching
Once that is done, then you must come up with a sketch of your idea on a paper that is the same size as the iPhone screen. That way, you will know what is going to come up on the application, and how you are going to get your users from the different points on your application. For each part or feature, you should have a page of sketch that can show you how you will be laying out these features, as well as explanations of how you will get from one part of the application to another.
After the sketching is completed, then you must arrange for a designer to make the application’s design online. This will give you a better idea of how the program will run, and to iron out any kinks that it may have.
Programming
Once that is sorted, then programming can start. This is the part which will take the longest, and may require you to change things around if the application does not work as planned. If your budget permits or your skills aren’t sufficiently developed in this area you might consider getting some help with this part of the process. If you do get help consider a fixed price for the work. This is where your planning is very important so you can map out exactly what is expected for the price agreed.
Ultimately, it is all about the right preparation. If you go over everything properly and do everything in a step by step process, then it is not that difficult to create an iPhone application from scratch (technical skills permitting). The key I almost always the idea behind it, how well it works, and how unique it is. If these three boxes are ticked then chances are you have a successful application that will be well received and downloaded once it is introduced on the Apple iTunes Store.
