How to Host Your Static Website on Dropbox for Free

Dropbox is a online file storage and syncing service that enables users to store and share files and folders on the Windows, Mac and Linux computers. It’s insanely useful for swapping files with friends and colleagues, or backing up your important stuff and accessing it from any computer or mobile device.

Now Dropbox also provides an option to host your website for free. It has an advantage that it is available for multiple mobile and desktop platforms so that you can share your dropbox files over multiple devices.

How to Host your Static Website on Dropbox

Here is a step by step guide to host your website on Dropbox for free.

  1. Login to your Dropbox and Navigate to the Public folder. In case you have deleted it earlier, create a new folder and name it ‘public’.
  2. Now create a new folder with any name inside public folder. We assume ‘sample’ in our case.
  3. Copy all your static site files – HTML, CSS and Images to the folder ‘sample’, you just created.
  4. Finally copy the public link of index file of your site. for doing so, click on the index file and select “Copy public link” from the menu.
  5. Now try that URL in your browser to verify everything is working fine.

If it works fine, you can share that URL with others or if you want a dedicated domain for your site, you can get one registered for yourself and set up domain forwarding to the public link of index file of your site.

You can also try the India Get Online program by Google India, in partnership with ICICI Bank and HostGator. This initiative is mainly designed to bridge the information gap that exists online due to the lack of presence of local Indian businesses on the Internet.

Note: For sharing public folder file with anyone, you just need to provide the other person the particular file URL. So these files can be accessed publicly by everyone.  Also any server-side scripting language, such as PHP or ASP are not allowed which means all your website must be comprised of simple html codes and images.
