May 1, on “Good Morning America,” Facebook Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg announced the company’s life-saving feature which allow users to indicate that they are organ donors.
Zuckerberg said in the TV interview that he was inspired by the late Steve Jobs to spread awareness about the program. Jobs received a liver transplant while being treated for pancreatic cancer.
“An average of 18 people per day — will die waiting, because there simply aren’t enough organ donors to meet the need,” Zuckerberg wrote on the company’s news page.

Facebook users in the US and UK can now choose to indicate that they’re organ donors, as well as specify which state they’re registered in, post a message explaining why they became a donor, and give the date they registered in their state.
How To Add Organ Donor Status to Your Facebook Timeline
Your status as an organ donor can remain private as part of your Facebook Timeline or can be marked as public information. Here’s how:
- Go to your Facebook Timeline and select “Life Event” as your update.
- Choose “Health & Wellness” and then select “Organ Donor” from the top of the list. You can also add a story about when, where or why you decided to become a donor.
- If you are not already registered in a donation program, Facebook offers a link to Donate Life America. The process is simple — just have your driver’s license number handy.
- To adjust your privacy settings on this Timeline update, click on the dropdown arrow next to “Public” and make your selection.
